Mission Accomplished: Zanetta Udo-Obong runs first sub 12 seconds in nearly two years; Godbless, Onojuvwevwo 1 and 2 in 200m
Zanetta Udo-Obong, the daughter of Nigeria’s relay specialist, Enefiok Udo-Obong finally stormed to her first sub-12 seconds run in the 100m event in nearly two years.
The 18-year-old sped to an 11.99 finish to place second in heat 2 and fourth in overall classification at the Vertklasse Meeting in North Carolina on Saturday.
This would be the third time she will be running inside 12 seconds but the first since July 2024 when she ran 11.89 to place first in the third heat of the 100m event at the Lagos Athletics Series League Finals held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Ground in Yaba, Lagos.
The Lenoir-Rhyne University Sophomore seems to be determined to carve indelible niches for herself after starting the indoor season with 12.05, her fastest time since she ran 11.89 in 2024.
She will be looking to get to the podium at a global or continental event as an individual medalist as well as winning relay medals like her father.
Her immediate target would be getting to run and race to the podium in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships later this summer.
Meanwhile, it was 1 and 2 for the Nigerian Louisiana State University, LSU duo of Tima Godbless and Ella Onojuvwevwo in the 200m event at the Battle at the Beach in California.
Godbless, who did notstart the 100m event, ran a wind-aided 22.66 to win ahead of her school and countrymate, Onojuvewevwo who also ran a wind aided 22.97 to come second.
In the women’s 100m decided earlier, Tiana Eyakpobeyan ran a wind-assisted 11.30 to finish third.
