Simbine wants to keep the momentum going after winning 100m in Xiamen
Akani Simbine says he wants to keep the momentum going after running 9.99 seconds to win the 100m event at the opening leg of the 2025 Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China.
Fellow African, Ferdinand Omanyala was second (10.13) with reigning World indoor 60m champion, Jeremiah Azu third (10.17).
The South African arrived Xiamen as the World leader after speeding to a 9.90 finish at the World Athletics Continental Gold Tour meeting in Botswana earlier this month and has extended his dominance with his victory at athletics’ premier one day meeting.
‘I want to keep the momentum going,’ Simbine said after the race and believes he and his colleagues can run faster than they all did in Xiamen.
‘I think if the conditions are good and we have a favorable wind to us, if everything is primed for us to run fast, we will run fast. I am happy with putting the race together as I said before and getting the win,’ he said.
Simbine, 31, will be hoping to make it a second win in a row when he faces the same stellar cast next week when the Diamond League train makes its scheduled second of 15 stops in Shanghai.
The World indoor championships 60m bronze medalist will be praying for a good weather to run faster as he continues with his preparation for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan where he will be looking to make it to the podium after one fourth and two fifth place finishes.
