Williams extends head-to-head record to 20-17 against Amusan, shifts focus to Shanghai

Reigning World 100m hurdles champion, Danielle Williams of Jamaica says she is going back to training to prepare for the second leg of the 15-leg Wanda Diamond League in Shanghai, China next weekend after winning the opening leg in Xiamen, also in China.

The two-time World champion ran 12.53 to win the race ahead of Paris 2024 Olympic finalist, Grace Stark (12.58) and South African, Fourie Marione (12.62) with Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan in fourth (12.74).

Williams has thus extended her head-to-head wins against the Nigerian to 20-17 and has gone further behind Grace Stark (3-0 in head-to-head) and lost for the first time in six races to the South African.

The Jamaican revealed she came here to execute a game plan, and it worked perfectly well.

‘I came out here with the focus on the last half of the race, trying to finish strong. I think I did that, so I am satisfied,’ said the Jamaican who says she is returning to training ahead of the meet in Shanghai as she seeks to make it two out of two in the opening two Diamond League meetings.

‘I am going back to training to prepare for Shanghai next weekend,’ she added but knows the season is still young.

‘I am going back to training to prepare for Shanghai next weekend. Absolutely, It is early in April and the season will not be over until September, so we are not even halfway into the training cycle but this is definitely a good sign.

‘I have tweaked a lot. The game has changed. I mean everyone is running really fast so I have to make some tweaks to get up there. Tweaked the start and tweaked the finish.’
