Grand Slam Track: How Ofili can win $100,000 top prize money after coming third in 100m
Favour Ofili ran a wind-aided 10.94 to place third in the 100m event on the opening day of the Miami leg of Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track on Friday evening.
The Nigerian has thus garnered six points, six behind winner of the event, Melissa Jefferson-Wouden who also ran a wind-aided 10.75 to win while Tamaris Davis got eight points for coming second with equally a wind-aided 10.79 run.
Ofili, 22, is aspiring to supplant Tobi Amusan as the Nigerian to win the biggest prize money in a track and field competition.
Amusan earned $70,000 for winning the 100m hurdles at the 18th World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA in 2022, improving on the $30,000 she earned for winning the Diamond League crown a year earlier in Zurich, Switzerland.
Ofili’s first hurdle is to ensure she crosses the finish line first ahead of pre-race favourite, Thomas and hopes Jefferson-Wouden does not come within the top three.
If the Nigerian wins, it will take her total points to 18 and this may be enough if Jefferson-Wouden, already on 12 points places fourth which will bring her total points haul to 17.
