Ogunleye to make 2025 Diamond League debut in July
Reigning Olympic Shot Put champion, Yemisi Ogunleye will join the 2025 Diamond League train when it makes its ninth of scheduled 15th stops in Eugene, Oregon on July5, 2025.
Ogunleye was missing in action in the opening two Diamond League meetings in Xiamen and Kepaio and last competed in March at the European indoor championships in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands where she threw 19.56m to place second.
The Nigeria-born Germany international made history last year as the first German to win an Olympic Shot Put title since Astrid Kumbernuss won in 1996 in Atlanta, USA.
Ogunleye will go up against two-time Diamond League champion Chase Jackson as well as the two athlete she outthrew to win the gold in Paris last August, Maddi Wesche of New Zealand and Song Jiayuan of China.
The 26-year-old who was born in Germersheim, Germany to a German mother and a Yoruba Nigerian father will be seeking to become the first German in 10 years to win the gold medal in the Shot Put at World Athletics’ flagship event, the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
Christina Schwanitz is the last German to win gold in the event when she threw 20.37m to beat Gong Lijiao of China (20.30m) and Michelle Carter of the USA (19.76m) in Beijing, China in 2015.
