Elegbeleye to NPFL Club Managers: Embrace Tech, Trim Squads, Set Standards

At a pivotal seminar held in Ikenne, Ogun State, NPFL Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye charged members of the Nigeria Premier Football League Clubs Managers Association (NPFLCMA) to prioritize technology and collaboration to raise the standard of domestic football.

Addressing the gathering, Elegbeleye encouraged coaches to interact and share knowledge, emphasizing that no one holds a monopoly on expertise. According to him, increased tactical dialogue among coaches would sharpen their skills and enhance match-day competitiveness across the league.

He urged clubs to adopt scientific performance analysis tools, warning that embracing technology was essential for coaches aiming to stay relevant in modern football management. He also decried the issue of over-bloated squads, citing examples of clubs registering between 40 and 60 players—many of whom rarely see action.

“Resources that could be used for football technology are being spent on salaries of unproductive players,” he lamented.

Beyond tactics, Elegbeleye reminded club managers of their wider responsibilities as role models both on and off the pitch. He highlighted the critical role coaches play in developing players who are not only skilled but also disciplined and well-rounded individuals.

“You must foster a culture of fair play, respect, and sportsmanship, both on and off the pitch,” he said.

The NPFL boss also stressed the importance of media relations, reiterating that post-match press conferences are mandatory—regardless of match outcomes. He described the media as a vital partner in growing the league’s appeal and urged coaches to set the tone for professionalism by always honouring post-match interview obligations.

“A rich media presence helps take the league’s story into our homes through radio, TV, print, and mobile devices,” he added, calling for renewed commitment ahead of the 2025/26 NPFL season.

Welcoming participants to the seminar, Shooting Stars Manager and association chairman, Gbenga Ogunbote, expressed appreciation for Elegbeleye’s presence and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to implementing lessons from the seminar.

Among those in attendance were Remo Stars Chairman and association patron Hon. Kunle Soname, NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen, and NPFL Communications Director Harry Iwuala.
