Flying Eagles open camp in Abuja, aim to sharpen attack ahead of WAFU B Tournament
Nigeria’s U20 men’s football team, the Flying Eagles, have resumed training camp in Abuja as part of their preparations for the upcoming WAFU B U20 Boys Tournament scheduled to take place in Ghana from 10th to 23rd July 2025.
Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu has emphasized the team’s renewed focus on improving its attacking play, which he identified as a key area of concern from previous campaigns.
‘We are taking proactive measures to ensure that the challenges we encountered previously are addressed squarely,’ he stated. ‘My assistants and I are very much aware of the issues related to the team’s attacking prowess and we are making concerted efforts to rectify the situation.’
Zubairu also noted that the tournament offers a vital opportunity to assess additional players, with the broader aim of preparing the squad for the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile, scheduled from 27th September to 19th October 2025. Nigeria will compete at the global event alongside South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt.
In the WAFU B competition, the Flying Eagles will compete in Group A:
10th July: vs Ghana
13th July: vs Benin Republic
Group B features Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Togo.
Zubairu concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s ability to make a strong showing, using the regional tournament as a springboard for success on the global stage.
