Abeokuta Gears Up to Host Africa’s Brightest Young Athletes
With just two weeks to go, anticipation is soaring as Abeokuta prepares to host the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled for July 16–20, 2025.
A total of 43 countries have confirmed participation, with 937 athletes and officials set to converge on the city for what promises to be a thrilling showcase of Africa’s emerging track and field talent.
Organizers are working around the clock to deliver a world-class experience, fine-tuning every detail—from transportation and accommodation to competition logistics and athlete services.
Africa’s athletics giants—Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt—will be joined by strong contenders like Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, and Uganda.
Team Nigeria leads the pack with 132 participants (60 male athletes, 50 female athletes, and 22 officials), followed by:
South Africa: 100 participants
Ethiopia: 69 participants
Kenya: 67 participants
Algeria: 65 participants
This continental gathering comes just two months after Abeokuta successfully hosted the Gateway Games 2024, welcoming over 15,000 athletes and officials. The city earned widespread praise for its hospitality and infrastructure, cementing its status as a rising hub for international sports.
Certified by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), the championship is expected to spotlight the next generation of African stars, blending youthful energy with national pride.
