Tragedy Averted! Ogun state Governor, Abiodun rescues Tunisian athletes, officials after road crash in Abeokuta

A potentially tragic incident was narrowly avoided on Saturday, July 19, when a vehicle transporting members of the Tunisian delegation to the CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships in Abeokuta was involved in a road traffic accident en route to the Games Village.

The vehicle, which was not traveling under the official safety protocol typically accompanied by security and support personnel, veered into trouble along the designated route.

By a stroke of fate, His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, Governor of Ogun State, was commuting nearby and immediately intervened, offering first-response assistance at the scene.

The injured athletes were swiftly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, where they received emergency care before being transferred to a specialized facility for further treatment.

Governor Abiodun and the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) arrived at the hospital shortly after and have since been personally overseeing the athletes’ recovery.

The NSC has expressed deep sympathy to the Tunisian delegation, their families, and teammates, while reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of all athletes participating in the championship.

The Commission also commended the swift response of Ogun State’s emergency services, medical personnel, and security agencies.
