Henry Onyekuru: ‘I’m ready to run again’ in Ankara

Nigerian winger Henry Onyekuru has declared his readiness for a new chapter in the Turkish Super Lig, joining newly promoted Gençlerbirliği on a two-year deal. Speaking at the club’s Beştepe İlhan Cavcav Facilities alongside fellow signing Dimitrios Goutas, Onyekuru credited his close friend Peter Etebo and head coach Hüseyin Eroğlu for influencing his decision.

‘I’ve been following Gençlerbirliği since last year because of Etebo,’ Onyekuru said. ‘After the new coach arrived, they looked transformed. Watching them become champions made me want to be part of their project.’

After a difficult 2024 season marked by injuries, the 28-year-old is eager to reignite his career in Ankara. Known for his blistering pace and versatility on the left wing, Onyekuru revealed that Gençlerbirliği’s style of play was a decisive factor in his move.

‘I came here almost without meeting any other club. The football they played excited me, and I knew I could contribute.’

Currently at 70% fitness, he expects to be fully match-ready within two weeks. His goal? To return to scoring, assisting, and thrilling fans with his trademark runs.

‘I want to get back to delivering strong performances. I hope there’ll be a lot of ‘running from Onyekuru’ this season.’

Reflecting on his time at Galatasaray, where he won the Turkish Super Lig and Cup in 2018/19, Onyekuru acknowledged the club’s special place in his heart—but made it clear his focus is now on Gençlerbirliği.

‘Galatasaray is special, no doubt. But now, I’m committed to Gençlerbirliği and ready to give my all for the badge.’

Off the pitch, the Lagos-born star is settling comfortably into life in Ankara.

‘Ankara is beautiful. From the moment I arrived, I haven’t seen anything negative.’
