Rangers edge Abia Warriors in Tico/Select preseason opener

Eight-time Nigerian Premier League champions Rangers International FC kicked off their 2025/2026 campaign with a narrow yet spirited 1-0 victory over oriental rivals Abia Warriors in the opening fixture of the 7th Tico/Select-Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament, held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
The game’s only goal came in dramatic fashion right before halftime, when Alex Jerry, Rangers’ newest attacking threat, pounced on a loose ball after an effort from Daniel Eni was cleared off the line. It was a moment of sharp instinct and precision from the forward, who had already tested the Warriors goalkeeper with two earlier efforts.
With returning midfield maestro Ugochukwu Ugwuoke orchestrating play from deep, Rangers dominated the first half, creating chances and maintaining territorial control. But in the second half, Abia Warriors—preparing for continental duty in the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup—responded with renewed intensity.
Under the guidance of Coach Imama Amapakabo, the Umuahia side brought on Joseph Atule, whose introduction injected pace and purpose. However, they were denied time and again by a resolute Rangers backline anchored by Monday Daniel and Iwundu Chidozie, with George Abine standing firm in goal.
The win gives Rangers a strong start to the preseason tournament, while Abia Warriors will seek redemption in their next match against Ingas FC. Rangers will go on to battle Great Achievers FC of Enugu as the tournament continues.
