President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s indomitable women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumphant march into the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket—a feat that marks their fifth consecutive appearance in the championship game.
In a thrilling semi-final showdown dubbed ‘the final before the final,’ D’Tigress once again proved their mettle, overcoming perennial rivals Senegal with a commanding 75–68 victory at the Palais De la Sport, Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The win not only secured their place in Sunday’s final but also guaranteed Nigeria a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
President Tinubu, in a message of admiration and pride, praised the reigning champions for their resilience, discipline, and dominance, noting that their seventh consecutive win over Senegal was a testament to their unwavering spirit and tactical brilliance.
‘I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament—qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide,’ the President said.
He reserved special commendation for Coach Rena Wakama, the team’s trailblazing first female Head Coach, whose leadership has been nothing short of inspirational.
‘I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,’ President Tinubu added.
As D’Tigress prepare to face Mali in the grand finale on Sunday, August 3, anticipation is soaring. The match is a rematch of the 2021 final, where Nigeria emerged victorious with a 70–59 win.
Mali, who last lifted the trophy in 2007, will be eager to end Nigeria’s reign, but D’Tigress—riding a 28-game AfroBasket winning streak—are poised to make history as the first nation to win five consecutive titles.
The President assured the team of his unwavering support as they chase their seventh overall AfroBasket crown, urging them to remain focused and finish what they started with the same grace and grit that has defined their journey.
