NPFL Youth League: Remo Stars, Ikorodu City in Neck-and-Neck Battle at Ikenne Zone
The 2025 NPFL Youth League’s Ikenne zone is shaping up to be a compelling two-horse race between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City, as both teams remain tied on points following Matchday 2. However, Remo Stars hold a slender edge due to superior goal difference, courtesy of their emphatic 4-1 victory over Shooting Stars.
Ikorodu City remain close contenders after securing a 2-0 win over Sunshine Stars, showcasing the depth and discipline of the Lagos-based youth outfit. In the mix as well are Bendel Insurance, who climbed to third with three points after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kwara United.
Despite the fierce competition at the top, Remo Stars Head Coach Ajobolade Olumide insists his team’s focus remains developmental rather than points based.
“We really are not very interested in the position on the log. We are, however, going to be competing to the best of our abilities. In the way we are structured, this is another competition to assess our development—which is what the team is about,” Olumide told NPFL Media via telephone late Tuesday afternoon.
On the question of their tight contest with Ikorodu City, Olumide dismissed any notion of rivalry, emphasizing the opportunity for growth.
“We welcome the challenge to test our setup. We and Ikorodu City do not have the opportunity to play each other, hence we welcome this opportunity.”
As the competition intensifies, teams will observe a rest day on Wednesday, August 6, with action resuming on Thursday for Matchday 3, promising more drama and development from the country’s promising young talents.
