Semi Ajayi Delivers Defensive Statement on Hull City Debut

Semi Ajayi marked his Hull City debut with a commanding performance at the heart of defence, helping the Tigers secure a hard-fought goalless draw against Coventry City in their Championship opener.
The match, played at the Coventry Building Society Arena, saw Hull City produce a disciplined and resolute display — a promising start to the Sergej Jakirović era.
Speaking after the match, Ajayi expressed satisfaction with both the result and the team’s defensive solidity.
‘Coming to a place like this and keeping a clean sheet is definitely a positive,’ said Ajayi. ‘There are areas we can improve, no doubt, but there’s a lot to build on. We started well, quietened the crowd early, and got a good grip on the game.’
The Nigerian international was particularly pleased with the team’s ability to withstand pressure during key moments.
‘There were spells when we had to dig deep and defend, and I think we did that really well. We didn’t look like conceding, and that’s something we can carry into next week and beyond.’
Reflecting on his own performance, Ajayi was candid yet optimistic.
‘I was pleased. A clean sheet is always what a defender’s looking for. There are things I can sharpen up, but it’s a solid foundation. I take my one-on-one matchups seriously — whoever I’m up against, I want to dominate and win those duels.’
