Gov Diri Assures Timely Delivery of Sports Projects as Bayelsa Eyes 2028 National Sports Festival Hosting
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing all necessary infrastructure to ensure the state is fully prepared to host the 2028 National Sports Festival.
The governor made this pledge during a courtesy visit by the National Sports Commission delegation led by Director General Bukola Olopade at Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Diri emphasized that Bayelsa has matured into a viable host for the prestigious multi-sport event, citing his administration’s substantial investments in sports development.
He acknowledged that the lack of adequate facilities had previously hindered the state’s hosting ambitions but revealed that this challenge is being addressed through the construction of a new 25,000-capacity stadium—expandable to 35,000.
He assured that funding would not be an obstacle, noting that 30 percent of the stadium’s construction cost has already been paid, and the contractor has committed to delivering the project by 2027.
Beyond infrastructure, Governor Diri highlighted the state’s improved security architecture, including the deployment of 24-hour surveillance via CCTV systems, which has significantly reduced crime rates.
He expressed confidence that Bayelsa’s peaceful environment, hospitality, and sporting pedigree would position it favorably for selection as host of the 2028 festival.
‘As a former Commissioner for Sports, this moment is historic for me,’ Diri said. ‘We’ve made a bid that is acceptable to the NSC. Bayelsa is peaceful, welcoming, and deeply invested in grassroots sports. From the Prosperity Cup to our wrestling and table tennis programs, we’re building a legacy.’
In his remarks, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, praised the governor’s unwavering support for sports, describing it as globally admirable.
The Olympic and world wrestling champion expressed optimism that Bayelsa would deliver one of the most memorable editions of the National Sports Festival if granted hosting rights.
Igali also commended the professionalism of the NSC delegation in inspecting the proposed facilities, reinforcing the state’s readiness and commitment.
