Those were the words of Eric Chelle, spoken with quiet conviction in an interview with Osasu Obayiuwana.

The Malian tactician, now charged with leading Nigeria’s Super Eagles through a turbulent World Cup qualifying campaign, isn’t fazed by the noise surrounding his team’s faltering start.

‘People have written us off. I’m not bothered,’ he said. ‘I’m focused on preparing my players for the remaining four matches. I believe we’ll surprise a lot of people.’

It’s a bold statement, considering Nigeria’s current position — winless at home, trailing in the group, and facing the real possibility of missing out on a second consecutive FIFA World Cup. But Chelle’s optimism isn’t blind. It’s rooted in belief, in preparation, and in a deep desire to prove himself on one of Africa’s biggest stages.

‘I didn’t come to Nigeria because of money. I was earning more in my last job,’ he revealed. ‘I came here because this is a very big team. I want to prove something. I came here for the challenge.’

Chelle, though, remains composed.

‘I’ve heard a lot of stories, about them wanting to sack me and replace me with someone else,’ he admitted. ‘I know quite well that I can be fired after one match. This is the life in football. But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract.’
