2025 Diamond League: Yemisi Ogunleye Misses Zurich Final After Fourth-Place Finish in Brussels

Olympic Shot Put champion Yemisi Ogunleye will not feature in the final of the women’s Shot Put event when the 2025 Diamond League reaches its climax next week at the Weltklasse in Zurich. The German athlete, born to a Nigerian father, fell short of qualification after finishing fourth at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels—the last qualifying meet of the season.
Ogunleye’s best throw of the evening was 18.99 meters, achieved in the second round. The effort earned her five points, bringing her total to 10—just one shy of the final qualifying spot held by USA’s Jaida Ross, who failed to score in Brussels after placing ninth.
It marks a disappointing turn for Ogunleye, who finished third in the Diamond League final last year and was hoping to build on her gold medal triumph at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
With Zurich now out of reach, she will shift her focus to the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she aims to return Germany to the podium in the women’s shot put—a feat last achieved by Christina Schwanitz in 2015 in Beijing.
