Why Arsenal’s “Perfect Defence” Will Be Torn Apart at Anfield

Arsenal fans must be feeling good with their two clean sheets, like it’s a trophy. Leeds and United barely laid a glove on them, and suddenly the Emirates faithful think they’ve reinvented Italian defending and have a chance to win the league. 

Saliba & Gabriel: Europe’s Best Pairing?

Let’s give them credit where it’s due: William Saliba and Gabriel are undoubtedly the best centre-back pairing in the league. Both of them walk into any team in Europe and start without question. Add Jurrien Timber and Calafiori as full-backs who can defend and attack, plus the fact that Arsenal just pulled off one of their smartest transfer windows in years, topping it off with Eberechi Eze, and you can genuinely see why they’re excited.

But let’s be real: Arsenal’s defence has looked clever against blunt knives. They suffocated United’s counter, and Leeds barely tested them. That’s hardly a stress test for a backline now being hailed as untouchable. 

Walking into Anfield is a different world entirely. Anfield is where pressing traps multiply, chaos becomes oxygen, and defensive confidence evaporates in minutes. Even a Van Dijk who looks less like a wall and more like a revolving door these days is backed by a forward line that smells blood.

Where Order Meets Chaos

And here’s the difference: Liverpool have teeth. Salah doesn’t just score goals; he rips open entire defensive structures with his movement. Hugo Ekitike has been scoring for fun and looks like the kind of striker who thrives on space. 

Arsenal’s brave defensive line will look less like strategy and more like suicide if they try that at Anfield. One mistimed step, one bad angle, and suddenly it’s Salah or Ekititke sprinting in behind, with Alisson or Van Dijk already picking out the long pass.

Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room either: Bukayo Saka is missing this clash through injury. That’s Arsenal’s heartbeat, their release valve, their security blanket. Without him, their attack suddenly looks far more predictable. We saw it last season,  when Saka wasn’t on the pitch, Arsenal’s patterns broke down, their threat faded, and mentally they lost their edge. Anfield is not the place you want to be searching for a plan B.

Reality Check Incoming

Prediction? Arsenal’s clean-sheet parade ends emphatically. Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal. Klopp’s men might not be perfect, but at home their firepower will rip through even the most confident of defensive records. This isn’t United or Leeds,  this is Anfield. And Arsenal fans are in for a nasty shock.

United are desperate to shake off a sluggish start, but Burnley have no fear of Old Trafford. Expect another scrappy afternoon for Ruben Amorim’s men. 1-1.

Tottenham vs Bournemouth (Sat, 3:00 PM)
Spurs have rediscovered their cutting edge. Bournemouth won’t make it easy, but Thomas Frank’s side should finally concede but squeeze through. 3-1 to Spurs.

Brighton vs Manchester City (Sun, 2:00 PM)
Brighton can give anyone a scare at the Amex, but Pep Guardiola doesn’t usually stumble twice in a row. Expect a ruthless response. City edge it 2-1.

The Final Before the Final

As good as those fixtures are, they all feel like warm-ups. Liverpool vs Arsenal is different. This is the litmus test, the clash that feels like a final before the final. Last season’s champions against last season’s runners-up, power against structure, chaos against control.
