NSC Director General Olopade denies alleged power struggle with Chairman Dikko, reaffirms his role as administrative head

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has categorically denied recent media reports suggesting internal conflict and a power tussle within the Commission’s leadership.

Speaking to journalists during the 9th National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, Olopade described the claims as ‘half-truths, innuendoes, propaganda and outright falsehood,’ propagated by what he termed ‘quack and contemptible journalists.’

‘There was never a time we fought over money, contracts, or positions,’ Olopade stated in a report in The Guardian.

‘My relationship with the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, is rock-solid and built on sincerity. I know my role as Director General, and I fully respect his leadership as Chairman. The so-called rift is shameful, wicked, and totally false.’

The allegations, published by BSNSports.com.ng under the headline ‘Olopade, Dikko Clash Over Supremacy At National Sports Commission,’ claimed a quiet power struggle was unfolding between the DG and the Chairman over the interpretation of their roles.

Olopade clarified that the National Sports Commission (Establishment) Act, 2023 clearly defines his responsibilities. According to the Act:

The Director General is both the Secretary to the Commission and its Chief Administrative Officer, appointed by the President.

The DG is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Commission and may designate staff to act as Secretary in specific cases.

The DG’s role is comparable to the former Permanent Secretary or Secretary General of sports federations, but with elevated executive authority.

While the Chairman sets the general policy direction and serves as the public face of the Commission, the DG is legally empowered to execute those policies, manage staff, and oversee operations.

The Act does not confer CEO status on the Chairman, nor does it diminish the DG’s authority.

Olopade emphasized that the NSC remains focused on its mission to develop Nigerian sports and empower youth athletes nationwide.

‘We are united in purpose, and our leadership is aligned. This Commission is bigger than any individual ego or media sensationalism,’ he concluded.
