Like Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri, Chukwuma, Ochonogor, Brume also fall at first hurdle at World Championships

Sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma failed to advance beyond the opening round of the women’s 100m event on the opening day of the 20th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The Nigerian, 23, ran 11.27 to place fifth in her opening round heat (2), missing out on the automatic qualifying spot, and her time is not among the three fastest times that also qualified for the semifinals.

Chukwuma was a semifinalist in Budapest, Hungary, two years ago at the 19th edition of the Championships and has now ended her participation in the Championships, joining discus throwers Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, who both failed to advance to their event’s final.

Long jumpers Prestina Ochonogor and Ese Brume are also out of the Championships after they both failed to advance to the final.

Ochonogor had two failed attempts and managed 6.05m in her second attempt, crashing out in her debut at the Championships.

Brume, with her 6.46m second round effort, has now failed to qualify for the long jump final for the first time since 2017, when she made her debut at the Championships.

She was a bronze medal winner in 2019, silver in 2022, and finished fourth in 2023.
