Amusan powers into fifth consecutive World Championships semifinal
World 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan continued her remarkable consistency on Sunday, storming into the semifinals at the 20th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The 28-year-old Nigerian star clocked 12.53 seconds to win the sixth and final heat of the first round, securing her fifth straight semifinal appearance since her debut in London back in 2017.
Amusan, who is aiming to reclaim the world title she lost in Budapest two years ago, remains a strong contender to reach her fourth consecutive final.
A reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Amusan’s performance once again highlights her dominance on the global stage.
In contrast, Sade Olatoye’s campaign came to an early end as she failed to advance past the qualifying round for the fourth consecutive World Championships. Her throw of 68.82m placed her 10th in her group and 21st overall.
Olatoye joins six other Nigerian athletes who have exited the competition viz discus throwers Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, long jumpers Ese Brume and Prestina Ochonogor, sprinter Rosemary Chukwuma, and shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.
Enekwechi, however, delivered a standout performance by reaching his third final in four appearances. He finished fifth, his best result yet, surpassing his eighth-place finish on debut in 2019.
