Shearer hails Iwobi: ‘A Leader for Fulham’ in Team of the Week

Premier League legend and all-time top scorer Alan Shearer has named Alex Iwobi in his latest Team of the Week, praising the Fulham midfielder for his standout performance in their 3-1 comeback win over Brentford.
Iwobi was instrumental in turning the tide for Fulham on Saturday. With the team trailing 1-0, he stepped up with a crucial equaliser and followed it up with a sublime assist that helped seal the victory, Fulham’s second consecutive Premier League win.
Shearer, a Hall of Fame inductee, was full of admiration.
‘Excellent instincts to equalise and then a sensational through ball to put his team in front. Iwobi is now a leader for Fulham,’ he wrote.
The goal marked Iwobi’s first against Brentford in eight appearances.
He has now scored against 16 different Premier League teams since making his debut in October 2015.
His assist was also his first against the Bees, bringing his tally to assists against 17 different clubs in the competition.
Iwobi has now played 296 Premier League matches, just two shy of Shola Ameobi’s Nigerian record of 298 appearances. He’s on the verge of becoming the first Nigerian to reach 300 games in the Premier League, just weeks after becoming the first to surpass 20,000 minutes played.
He also holds the record for most assists by a Nigerian in the Premier League, now standing eight ahead of Nwankwo Kanu.
