Ese Brume drops 20 places in event ranking, 500 overall!
Four-time global medalist Ese Brume has dropped 20 places in the long jump and 500 places in the women’s overall ranking following World Athletics’ first post-World Athletics Championships update of its global rankings.
The 29-year-old, who failed to make it to the final of the long jump event at the recently concluded 20th World Athletics Championships, her second time missing the final in five appearances, had previously won bronze in 2019 and silver in 2022.
She dropped from eighth in the event ranking prior to the global showpiece in Tokyo to 28th afterward.
As if that were not enough, the 2021 Olympic medalist also fell in the overall women’s ranking, from 300th before the Championships to 800th after the event in Tokyo.
Brume is not the only Nigerian athlete to experience a drop. Favour Ofili also slipped from sixth to ninth in the 200m event ranking and from 79th to 132nd in the overall women’s ranking.
The 22-year-old has announced her decision to switch allegiance from Nigeria to Turkey, citing visionless and directionless leadership at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
She had to sit out the World Championships as Nigeria failed to release her to compete for her ‘adopted’ country, and the price she paid was a significant drop in the World rankings.
However, it is not all gloom. Chioma Onykwere-Lyons, Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, and Oyesade Olatoye all marginally moved up despite not reaching the finals.
Reigning Commonwealth Games discus throw champion Onykwere-Lyons moved from 27th pre-Championships to 25th, Obiageri from 31st to 30th, and hammer thrower Olatoye from 33rd to 32nd.
