‘Bafana Bafana still in control’: Hugo Broos dismisses Nigeria and Benin in 2026 World Cup race

South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos has boldly declared that Bafana Bafana remain firmly in charge of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, brushing aside any threat from Nigeria or Benin Republic.

Speaking ahead of South Africa’s crucial Group C fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, Broos expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s chances, despite FIFA’s recent decision to dock three points from South Africa for fielding a suspended player in their March clash with Lesotho.

‘If Benin win in Nigeria and Rwanda, congratulations to them,’ Broos said. ‘But I don’t think it will happen.’

He was equally dismissive of Nigeria’s prospects, noting that even if the Super Eagles win their remaining matches, they would only reach 17 points, same as Rwanda.

‘If we win our two matches, there’s a big chance we’ll qualify,’ he added.

The Belgian coach acknowledged the administrative blunder that led to the points deduction. However, he voiced frustration over FIFA’s handling of the case, describing the timing of the decision as ‘very strange.’

According to Broos, the sanctions committee met three times without mentioning South Africa, only to reopen the case unexpectedly.

‘One day after the last meeting, we got the letter. Very strange. It means there has been a lot of lobbying behind the scenes,’ he hinted.

Despite the setback, Broos remains resolute. His remarks suggest a clear dismissal of Nigeria and Benin as serious contenders, placing full faith in his squad to secure qualification.
