Eguavoen: I have no interest in Chelle’s job

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, has strongly refuted media reports suggesting he is being considered to replace current Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking on Wednesday, Eguavoen expressed disappointment over the rumours, which also named Coach Ladan Bosso as a potential successor should Chelle fail to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‘I’m deeply hurt by these baseless speculations. I have no idea where they’re coming from,’ Eguavoen stated. ‘My relationship with Coach Eric Chelle is professional and respectful. I have absolutely no interest in taking over the team and I’m fully behind him. I’m praying for his success.’

He recalled similar instances in the past where unfounded reports created tension between him and former Super Eagles coaches Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro.

‘It’s unnecessary and divisive,’ he said. ‘We must all work together to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup and triumphs at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.’

Eguavoen emphasized the importance of solidarity within the football community, urging stakeholders to focus on supporting the team rather than fueling distractions.
