Van Dijk urges calm after rare Anfield defeat to Manchester United

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called for unity and composure following the Reds’ 2–1 loss to Manchester United at Anfield, a result that marks just his fourth Premier League defeat at home since joining the club.

The Dutch defender, who has been a pillar of Liverpool’s dominance at Anfield, previously tasted defeat against Leeds United in 2022, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest in 2024, and now Manchester United in the 2025/26 season.

Two of those losses came under former manager Jürgen Klopp, and two under current boss Arne Slot.

Reflecting on the match, van Dijk admitted frustration over the nature of the goals conceded.

‘We gave away a very sloppy second goal. We had worked so hard to get back into the game. Overall, we were far too rushed and made poor decisions at key moments. There were openings where we lost the ball, and it cost us,’ he said in his post match remarks.

Despite creating several chances, Liverpool couldn’t find the equalizer, and van Dijk credited United’s tactical discipline.

‘United were very patient. They didn’t press us aggressively, but they stayed compact. We still had opportunities to win, but the reality is we lost.’

Looking ahead, van Dijk emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective and staying grounded.

‘It’s an interesting time now. We have to stick together, not just as players, but with the fans and everyone involved. First and foremost, we must stay humble and keep working. Confidence is key, and we need to remain calm.;

He also reminded supporters of the highs of last season, urging the team to retain the same mentality.

‘Last season was incredible. We were champions and everyone was full of praise. But we must carry that same spirit through tough times. It’s a long season, and it’s easy to spiral into negativity. It’s up to us to stay humble and improve quickly.’
