2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations: Ihezuo, Okoronkwo fire Super Falcons to 2-0 victory over Benin Amazons

Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a significant step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Benin Republic’s Amazons in the first leg of their qualifier held in Lome, Togo.

The reigning African champions asserted their dominance early in the match, with Rasheedat Ajibade nearly opening the scoring in the sixth minute, only to be denied by the crossbar. Folashade Ijamilusi followed up with a powerful strike that was parried away by Benin’s goalkeeper Ogoun.

The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when midfielder Deborah Abiodun sliced through a congested midfield with a precise pass to Chinwendu Ihezuo, who calmly finished to give Nigeria the lead.

The Super Falcons continued to control possession and tempo, limiting Benin’s chances. The Amazons had a brief moment of promise in the 36th minute when Moumouni broke through on the byline and fired at goal, but Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a crucial save.

Just before halftime, Abiodun once again demonstrated her vision by delivering a defense-splitting pass to Esther Okoronkwo, who slotted home Nigeria’s second goal. Benin nearly responded against the run of play, but Moumouni’s effort struck the post, ending the first half with Nigeria firmly in control.

The second half saw tactical adjustments and substitutions from both sides, making for a more balanced contest. Benin increased their intensity, especially on the wings, but Nigeria’s defense held firm. In the final minute, an in-swinging cross caused a scare in the Nigerian box, giving Sadikou a chance to score, but Nnadozie once again came to the rescue.

With a 2-0 advantage, the Super Falcons head into the return leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Tuesday with momentum and confidence, aiming to secure their place in the continental tournament.
