Chelle: We Will Miss Ndidi Vs DR Congo, But…
Super Eagles head coach Chelle has admitted his side will miss deputy captain Wilfred Ndidi, who is suspended for Sunday’s crucial clash against the Leopards after collecting a second yellow card in Thursday’s emphatic win over Gabon.
‘Ndidi is an important player for us. His experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team. But we will manage the situation. We have a large squad of players and we will make changes. Ndidi is still here with us and will support the team mentally and with his presence,’ Chelle said.
The coach is expected to turn to either Raphael Onyedika or Frank Onyeka to fill the void in midfield. Onyeka impressed when he came on in extra time against Gabon, while Chelle also has defensive reinforcements with Semi Ajayi now available after serving his suspension.
In attack, Chelle will rely on the firepower of Victor Osimhen, who scored twice against the Panthers and is chasing Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals for Nigeria. Osimhen currently has 31 goals and 12 assists in 45 games.
Options such as Ademola Lookman, Simon Moses (86 caps), Alex Iwobi (90 caps), Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, and Tolu Arokodare provide further depth upfront.
Chelle, however, warned of the threat posed by the Leopards, led by captain Chancel Mbemba, alongside Cipenga, Noah Sadiki, Silas Katompa, and a strong defensive unit. Their attack features Cédric Bakambu, Meshack Elia, Samuel Essende, and the prolific Fiston Mayele of Pyramids FC in Egypt.
