Werder Bremen Step Up Pursuit of Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi’s future at Nottingham Forest appears increasingly uncertain, with reports suggesting the Nigerian striker could be on his way back to Germany.

According to Africafoot, Werder Bremen are keen to secure his signature and have already made inquiries about his situation.

Awoniyi, who missed the start of the season through injury, returned to action on October 18 against Chelsea but has struggled to rediscover his form.

Since then, he has been largely restricted to substitute appearances, playing just 133 minutes across four Premier League games. A contract extension had been under consideration before his injury, but Forest’s board have reportedly cooled on the idea given his current struggles.

Sources indicate that Awoniyi is no longer central to Nottingham Forest’s plans, with the club open to letting him leave in January if a suitable offer arrives. Forest are also working to bring in another striker to support Igor Jesus, further casting doubt on Awoniyi’s role.

The 28-year-old, who prefers to remain in the Premier League, has yet to attract interest from other English clubs. However, Werder Bremen have emerged as strong contenders, with coach Horst Steffen said to be an admirer of Awoniyi’s power and athleticism.

Bremen had tracked him last summer and now appear ready to make a move.

Awoniyi remains under contract with Forest until June 2027 and is currently valued at €14 million on Transfermarkt.
