Team Nigeria Heads to Cairo for World Karate Championship
Team Nigeria has set off for Cairo, Egypt, where the World Karate Championship will take place from November 27 to 30, 2025.
The nation will be represented by five outstanding athletes who have demonstrated remarkable discipline and commitment in their preparation for this global stage.
The squad includes Loveth Ngozi Okoro (Kumite -50kg), Godfirst Orie Ukoha-Sampson (Kumite -55kg), Constance Tamunodiepreye Abode (Kumite -61kg), Ujunwa Caroline Nwankwo (Kumite +68kg), and Oluwaseun Olorunbe (Male Kata).
They will be guided by head coach Efezino Akpotu, with Olusegun Abode serving as leader of the delegation.
Four of the female athletes, Ngozi, Godfirst, Constance, and Ujunwa,are familiar names on the Nigerian karate scene, having consistently impressed at the annual Zainab Saleh International Female Open Karate Championship.
The tournament, founded by Hajiya Zainab Saleh, a board member of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), has played a vital role in empowering and elevating female karatekas across the country.
As the team prepares to showcase their talent against the world’s best, the KFN has expressed confidence in their ability to deliver strong performances.
At the same time, the federation has appealed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) for support in offsetting debts incurred to make the trip possible, noting that the championship falls under the NSC’s purview.
