Horvel Angels dethrone Fosla Academy to win HerGame Girls championship

Horvel Angels produced a stunning performance to dethrone defending champions Fosla Academy and clinch the 2025 HerGame Girls Football Championship title with a 2–0 victory in Abuja.

The final, played at the Area 3 Sports Complex, capped off a tournament that had grown in scale and quality, expanding from an Abuja-only contest to a regional showcase featuring 16 teams from across the North Central zone.

Agatha John opened the scoring in the first half with a composed finish after sustained pressure, before Lilian Odide, the breakout star of the competition, sealed the win with a clinical strike in the second half.

Odide finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, including the decisive one in the final.

SIK Paragon of Jos claimed third place earlier in the day with a 1–0 win over Generation Next, earning ₦100,000 in prize money.

Fosla Academy, beaten finalists, received ₦150,000, while champions Horvel Angels walked away with the top prize of ₦250,000.

Individual awards went to Patricia Habila of Fosla Academy as Most Valuable Player, Odide as Top Scorer, and Flora Williams of SIK Paragon as Best Goalkeeper.

Horvel Angels coach Ogbada Atta praised his team’s discipline and hunger, describing the victory over Fosla as a major achievement. Fosla’s coach Christopher Igbuku, though disappointed, lauded his players’ effort and vowed they would return stronger.

Tournament founder and sole sponsor, Dr. Pat Ajuma Ayegba, expressed satisfaction with the growth of HerGame, reaffirming her mission to build a national platform for female footballers.

She highlighted the importance of collaboration, thanking the Nigeria Football Federation for donating match balls and acknowledging the ₦1 million support from the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports.

FCT FA Secretary Haruna Ilerika commended the technical quality and organisation of the event, noting how far the championship had come in just its second edition.

With Horvel Angels crowned champions and Fosla Academy finishing second, the HerGame Girls Football Championship continues to establish itself as one of Nigeria’s most impactful grassroots pathways for nurturing future stars of women’s football.

Kabiru Amadu, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports; Hajiya Nafisa Shehu Mohammed, President of ROSOWA; Hajiya Amina Sani-Zango-Daura, Head of Women’s Football at the NFF; former NFF President and Fosla Academy founder Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi; and Haruna Ilerika of the FCT FA.
