Dominant China crush Japan to retain ITTF Mixed Team World Cup crown
China reaffirmed its dominance in world table tennis by clinching a third consecutive ITTF Mixed Team World Cup title as the 2025 edition concluded in Chengdu.
The hosts swept past Japan 8-1 in the final to lift the Guoliang-Sörling Trophy, underlining their supremacy in the format that will debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha set the tone with a commanding 3-0 win in the opening mixed doubles, while Wang Manyu and Lin Shidong added further victories to keep China firmly in control.
Japan, though well beaten in the final, celebrated silver after a strong campaign that highlighted the promise of their youthful squad, especially after missing out on the podium last year.
Earlier in the semifinals, China overcame Korea Republic 8-3, while Japan defeated Germany by the same scoreline to set up the title clash. Germany went on to secure bronze in a dramatic 8-7 victory over Korea Republic, becoming the first European nation to reach the podium at the Mixed Team World Cup.
The tournament delivered eight days of high-quality competition, with standout stories from across the globe. Croatia impressed in their debut appearance, while teams from all five continents showcased the growing reach of the format.
The Chengdu event also marked the final stop on the ITTF’s 2025 calendar, closing out a memorable year for the sport.
