CAF Confirms AFCON Will Be Held Every Four Years
The Africa Cup of Nations will now be staged every four years instead of every two, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on Saturday.
The announcement came as a surprise, delivered by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press conference following the organisation’s executive committee meeting in the Moroccan capital.
Since its inception in 1957, the tournament has traditionally been held biennially, becoming a cornerstone of African football and a vital source of income for CAF, generating an estimated 80 percent of the body’s revenue.
The decision marks a significant change in the competition’s structure and calendar, aligning AFCON more closely with other major international tournaments.
The timing of the announcement coincides with the start of the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off on Sunday in Morocco.
The hosts will open their campaign against Comoros at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, as the continent prepares for another showcase of African talent under a new long-term vision for the tournament’s future.
