‘I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time’: Mbeumo embraces AFCON debut with excitement

Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo says he is brimming with excitement and motivation ahead of his first-ever appearance at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, having missed the previous edition in Côte d’Ivoire due to injury.

Speaking to CAFOnline at the Indomitable Lions’ base camp in Agadir, the Manchester United attacker expressed his delight at finally getting the chance to feature in Africa’s flagship international competition.

‘I’m really excited. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and I’m very happy to be part of the squad here in Morocco,’ said Mbeumo.

The former Brentford star, who has already represented Cameroon at the FIFA World Cup, acknowledged the unique significance of AFCON.

‘It’s a source of pride for all Africans. In my family, we’ve always watched the AFCON, and for them to now see me play in it will be a great honour. It’s a very special competition to take part in,’ he added.

Drawn in Group F alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, and Mozambique, Cameroon enter the tournament as one of the favourites to progress to the knockout stage. Mbeumo, however, insists he feels no added pressure despite the country’s rich AFCON history.

‘For me, there is no pressure. Wherever I have played, I have always wanted to win. Cameroon has a great history at the AFCON with many successes, and we will try to represent the country well,’ said the forward, who has scored six goals in 16 English Premier League appearances this season.

Mbeumo also highlighted the expectations placed on him by head coach David Pagou, as he looks to play a decisive role for the Indomitable Lions.

‘Like everyone else, he expects me to make a difference through my voice, my dribbling, and everything I can bring to help the team achieve results. That’s what we are working towards,’ he concluded.
