Oliseh Urges Support for Super Eagles at AFCON 2025
Former Nigeria captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has voiced strong optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, urging Nigerians to rally behind the team despite their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Oliseh dismissed the prevailing skepticism surrounding the squad.
‘Contrary to what many might think, I am very optimistic about our chances at the Afcon,’ he said. ‘The players have only one goal in mind, which is the Afcon, since we didn’t qualify for the World Cup.’
Oliseh acknowledged the disappointment among fans but cautioned against unfair criticism of the players.
‘I find it a little bit unfair that a lot of people are beating down on these boys. Of course, I understand that people are upset that we did not qualify for the World Cup. But at the end of the day, they are representing us. And if I were in their shoes, I wouldn’t want everyone looking down at us. Some support from Nigerians would help, I think.’
The former midfielder, who captained Nigeria during his playing career and later managed the national team, emphasized that the Afcon represents the squad’s sole focus and opportunity to restore pride.
