Chelle: Super Eagles Aim to End AFCON 2025 Group Stage on a High
Eric Sekou Chelle, Nigeria’s coach, has made his intentions clear: Nigeria will go for the win when they face Uganda on Tuesday in their final Group C game of the ongoing 35th Africa Cup of Nations in Fès, Morocco.
With qualification already secured after two victories in their opening matches, the Super Eagles enter the clash as favourites, but Chelle insists his side will not take their foot off the pedal.
He stressed the importance of seizing opportunities in a tournament where margins are razor-thin.
‘Football is unpredictable. When you get an opportunity, it’s very important to take it. We know we are not going to have ten chances in this match, so sometimes one opportunity has to be enough to decide the game,’ Chelle said, underlining the need for sharpness in front of goal.
The encounter carries historical weight, marking only the second time Uganda and Nigeria have met at the AFCON finals.
Their first meeting came in 1978, when Uganda stunned Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-finals, with Phillip Omondi scoring the decisive goal. Uganda now faces a must-win situation, sitting third in the group with just one point, while Nigeria looks to maintain momentum heading into the knockout stages.
