Nigeria Vs Morocco: Osimhen’s Record Keeps Super Eagles Unbeaten in AFCON Matches
The Super Eagles head into their semifinal clash against hosts Morocco with a remarkable record tied to star striker Victor Osimhen.
Nigeria has never lost an Africa Cup of Nations match in which Osimhen has either scored or provided an assist, winning five and drawing two in such games.
That record stretches back to the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where Osimhen scored in the opening 1–1 draw against Equatorial Guinea, set up the winner in the 1–0 victory over Ivory Coast, struck again in the 2–0 defeat of Cameroon in the round of 16, and won the decisive penalty in the semifinal against South Africa that William Troost-Ekong converted before the team’s shootout victory after extra-time.
At the ongoing 2025 AFCON, Osimhen has continued to be decisive. He scored and assisted in the 3–2 win over Tunisia in the group stage, netted twice in the 4–0 demolition of Mozambique in the round of 16, and again scored and assisted in the 2–0 quarterfinal victory over Algeria.
His tally of four goals at this tournament is the most by a Nigerian since Odion Ighalo in 2019, and his three knockout goals place him in elite company alongside Rashidi Yekini (1994), Jay-Jay Okocha (2004), Ighalo (2019), and Ademola Lookman (2024) as the only Nigerians to score three times in the knockout rounds of a single AFCON.
With Nigeria chasing a historic sixth straight win at the competition, Osimhen’s record suggests that when he delivers, the Super Eagles do not falter. His influence could once again prove decisive against Morocco.
