Super Eagles Seal Ninth Bronze, Equal Egypt’s AFCON Wins Record
Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured their ninth Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the third‑place playoff at AFCON 2025.
Ademola Lookman converted the decisive spot‑kick to seal victory, ensuring Nigeria maintained their perfect record in bronze medal matches, winning all nine they have contested.
The result marked Nigeria’s 17th podium finish in AFCON history, the most by any nation, and also delivered their 64th win in the competition, drawing them level with Egypt as the teams with the most victories in the tournament’s history.
Despite the triumph, Nigeria failed to score in open play for the second consecutive match, a sharp contrast to their earlier form when they netted 14 goals in their first five games and had scored in 12 successive AFCON fixtures.
The Super Eagles nevertheless avoided conceding what would have been their 100th goal in AFCON history, keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet, matching their defensive run at AFCON 2023.
The shootout win was Nigeria’s 10th penalty decider at the continental showpiece, with the team now boasting seven victories and three defeats, surpassing Egypt as the nation with the most shootout wins in AFCON history.
With this bronze medal, Nigeria reaffirmed their status as one of Africa’s most consistent footballing powers, combining resilience, defensive solidity, and a knack for delivering results in high‑pressure matches.
