Usoro Returns to Boston Indoor Grand Prix as Onwuzurike Makes Debut
Nigeria’s triple jump record holder, Ruth Usoro, is set to make her return to the international stage at the 31st New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold, on January 24 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Usoro, who has been relatively quiet on the athletics scene and competed just once last year, is confirmed for the long jump event.
She will face a strong field that includes Americans Claire Bryant, Anna Hall, and Monae’ Nichols, as well as Germany’s Jasmine Moore.
Usoro first appeared at the Boston meet in 2024, finishing fourth with a 6.47m effort, and will be aiming to improve on that performance this time around.
She won’t be the only Nigerian athlete in action. Rising sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike is set to make his debut at the Grand Prix, competing in the 60m.
Onwuzurike, the 2023 NCAA 200m champion and 2021 World U20 champion, will line up against a stacked field featuring USA’s Jordan Anthony, the reigning Bowerman Award winner, Puerto Rico’s Eloy Benitez, Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake, American Cravont Charleston, and Terrence Jones of the Bahamas.
