Awoniyi Poised for Bundesliga Return as Mainz Open Loan Talks

Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi is on the brink of a Bundesliga return, with Mainz reportedly in talks to secure him on loan during the ongoing winter transfer window.

The Nottingham Forest striker has endured a difficult spell in England, struggling for consistent playing time over the past two seasons due to recurring injuries and fitness setbacks.

His form has yet to recover this campaign, and the arrival of Italian striker Lorenzo Lucca has further limited his opportunities at the City Ground.

According to SportsBoom, discussions are underway between Forest and Mainz over a potential deal. The move would mark a reunion, as Awoniyi previously spent the 2019/2020 season on loan at the German club.

Awoniyi joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 after a standout campaign in the Bundesliga, arriving for a reported club-record fee of £17 million.

Now 28, the Nigeria international could be set for a fresh chapter back in familiar territory as Mainz look to bolster their attacking options.
