‘This Is Where I Want to Be’: Awoniyi Quashes Exit Rumours After Brentford Win

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has insisted he remains committed to Nottingham Forest after ending his Premier League goal drought in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Brentford at the GTECH Stadium.

The 28-year-old sealed the win with a brilliant solo effort on the counter, his first league goal since January 6, 2025, bringing to an end a frustrating 384-day wait.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, has endured a difficult spell plagued by injuries and limited game time, sparking speculation of a return to Germany with Mainz and Werder Bremen reportedly interested.

Speaking after the match, however, Awoniyi dismissed talk of an exit, stressing his determination to succeed in England.

‘I have always believed this is where I want to be. I have always believed I am a Premier League player, no matter what’s going on around me,’ he told Forest TV.

Awoniyi credited manager Sean Dyche for restoring his confidence and giving him opportunities to rediscover his form.

‘The coach came in and he brought me back and this is something I am happy about. Getting the goal today is something I am happy about,’ he said.

Reflecting on his long wait for a goal, Awoniyi admitted his struggles were tied to lack of involvement.

‘Unfortunately, what I have been through over the last one-and-a-half years, I have not been playing a lot and I have not been involved. Maybe that’s why the goal is not there,’ he explained.

Despite the challenges, Awoniyi maintained faith in himself and his belief in God.

‘Getting the goal is what I am pleased about but the most important thing is that I have always believed in God and myself. I always knew he would be there for me,’ he added.

With his drought now behind him, Awoniyi’s focus is firmly on helping Forest climb the table and proving he belongs in the Premier League.
