Kun Khalifat FC Walks Away from NPFL Over ‘Outrageous’ Sanction

Kun Khalifat FC, one of the newly promoted sides in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has announced its immediate withdrawal from the competition, citing what it described as “outrageous and disproportionate” sanctions imposed by the league organisers.

In a letter signed by club owner Chukwudi Amaefula and dated February 3rd, the Owerri-based team accused the NPFL of undermining the growth of Nigerian football after it was fined N10 million and docked three points for failing to honour its matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri.

The club insisted it had provided valid reasons for its inability to travel for the game, but claimed its explanation was dismissed without fairness or transparency. According to Amaefula, the punishment reflects a system more concerned with revenue generation through heavy fines than with genuine development of the league.

Expressing frustration, the club stated that despite its investments in infrastructure and commitment to the rules, its efforts had been disregarded.

‘The NPFL’s actions have left us no choice but to withdraw from the league. We cannot continue to be part of a system that disregards the well-being of its member clubs and prioritizes revenue over development,’ the statement read.

Kun Khalifat urged other clubs to demand reforms and accountability from the NPFL, stressing that Nigerian football must move forward. The club also thanked its fans, players, and stakeholders for their support, promising to seek alternative platforms to showcase its talent and represent the country with pride.
