Khalifat FC Return to NPFL, Set for Matchday 25 Clash with 3SC

Barely hours after announcing their withdrawal from the 2025/2026 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), newly promoted side Kun Khalifat FC have confirmed their return to the competition and will honour their Matchday 25 fixture against Shooting Stars in Owerri.

The dramatic turnaround comes after the club initially released a strongly worded statement on Wednesday night, signed by owner Chukwudi Amaefula, declaring their exit from the league.

The decision followed sanctions imposed by the NPFL organisers, including a ₦10 million fine and the forfeiture of three points for failing to honour their Matchday 24 clash in Maiduguri against El-Kanemi Warriors.

Kun Khalifat had described the punishment as ‘outrageous and disproportionate,’ accusing the league of ‘prioritizing revenue over development.’

However, in a fresh statement on Thursday evening titled ‘Kun Khalifat FC Returns to NPFL Action’, the club announced it had resolved its differences with the League Management Board and would resume its campaign immediately.

‘Kun Khalifat FC is pleased to announce its return to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) following positive discussions with the League Management Board. The club had earlier withdrawn from the league citing unfair treatment and disproportionate sanctions,’ the statement read.

Club CEO Michael Amaefula expressed delight at the constructive dialogue that paved the way for reconciliation, noting that the team was eager to put the dispute behind them and focus on football.

‘We appreciate the League Management Board’s willingness to listen and address our concerns. We look forward to a more collaborative and productive relationship moving forward,’ he said.

The Owerri-based side confirmed that it has been reinstated and will face Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Dan Anyiam Stadium on Sunday, February 8, 2026.

The club called on fans to turn out in large numbers to support the team, stressing that their energy and passion would be crucial in driving the players to success.
