Thioune: ‘We have to be careful’ with Agu comeback

Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune has urged caution as defender Felix Agu edges closer to a return from a long injury layoff.

Agu, who has been sidelined for nearly four months with a syndesmosis injury, was named in Bremen’s squad for last weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach but remained on the bench throughout the 1-1 draw.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s meeting with SC Freiburg, Thioune emphasized the importance of managing the 26-year-old’s comeback carefully.

‘It was a difficult and lengthy injury with Felix. We have to be careful to ease him back into playing football,’ he explained.

The coach praised Agu’s qualities, noting that the left-back ‘can be a factor at any time during a match,’ but insisted that the medical team will determine his readiness.

On whether Agu will feature against Freiburg, Thioune said, ‘I’ll know that after 48 hours,’ adding that the decision will depend on medical assessments.

Agu’s last appearance for Bremen came in their 1-0 victory over St Pauli on October 4, 2025, and his return is seen as a boost for the squad, though Thioune is determined not to rush the process.
