Peseiro: Lookman Best Used as a Striker

Former Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has revealed that Ademola Lookman’s most effective position is as a striker, not on the wing where he has often been deployed for both club and country.

Lookman, 28, has enjoyed a sharp rise in his career since joining Atalanta, where he became decisive as a winger.

His versatility allows him to play as a supporting striker, with his ability to take on defenders and use both feet effectively. But Peseiro, who worked with him in the Nigerian national team, believes the forward is being underutilized.

‘On the wing, he creates imbalance and makes good diagonal runs, but his best position is as a striker,’ Peseiro told Marca. ‘He is very decisive when he is in the inside channels and sees the space because that is where he shoots, dribbles, or assists.’

The Portuguese tactician added: ‘His greatest strength is his footwork, although it is true that he is very strong behind, as we saw in his debut; that is another quality that can cause problems for Barcelona.’

Lookman joined Atlético Madrid from Atalanta during the winter transfer window and made an instant impact, scoring and assisting in a 5-0 Copa del Rey victory over Real Betis.

His explosive debut has raised expectations ahead of Atlético’s semi-final first leg against Barcelona on Thursday night.
