2026 Lagos City Marathon: Organisers Blame Illegal Runners for Medal Distribution Disruption, Pledge Medal Re-Distribution

Nilayo Sports Management Limited has acknowledged the disruption that marred medal distribution in the 10KM category of the 2026 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, assuring runners that every verified finisher will receive their medals in due course.

In a statement issued after the race, the organisers expressed appreciation to the tens of thousands of athletes who participated, while admitting that an unexpected crowd surge at the 10KM medal collection point forced officials to suspend distribution temporarily in order to protect the safety of runners, volunteers, and staff.

The company noted that the surge was worsened by the presence of unauthorized participants, including individuals attempting to claim medals with bibs from previous editions of the marathon.

Nilayo described their actions as a major factor in the congestion that disrupted the process.

‘Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by the surge or experienced distress during this period. We deeply regret any anxiety, discomfort, or inconvenience caused,’ the statement read.

The organisers confirmed that a re-distribution exercise will be carried out in the coming days, with medals available for collection by verified runners who present their original race bibs at designated points.

Strict queuing protocols, enhanced volunteer presence, and reinforced security measures will be implemented to ensure fairness and safety.

Nilayo also announced that an internal review of the medal distribution framework is underway, with new safeguards to be introduced, including increased numbers of trained volunteers, controlled queuing barriers, and strengthened coordination with security agencies.

The company expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its continued support and apologised to genuine 10KM runners who were inconvenienced.

It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and fairness in resolving all outstanding medal collection concerns.

‘Our assurance remains firm that every deserving finisher will receive their medal after due verification, and we will continue to strengthen our processes to ensure that the finish-line experience remains safe, orderly, and truly celebratory for all,’ Nilayo stated.
