Green: NPFL slipping back into ‘dark age’ after Kwara United violence

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) was once again marred by violence after Kwara United’s rescheduled matchday 22 clash against Rivers United in Ilorin ended in chaos.

Following the 1-1 draw at the Ilorin Township Stadium, home fans stormed the pitch, hurling objects at referees and match officials. In the ensuing disorder, Rivers United General Manager and NPFL Chairman of Chairmen, Chief Okey Kpalukwu, was brutally attacked, sustaining severe injuries that left him unconscious.

Barrister Chris Green, Rivers State Commissioner of Sports and current Chairman of the Rivers State Football Association, condemned the incident in strong terms.

Speaking to Brila FM, he described the attack as a return to the ‘dark age’ of Nigerian football, where hooliganism overshadows the game.

Green lamented that instead of accepting responsibility for their team’s struggles, Kwara United supporters directed their frustration at officials, leaving Kpalukwu with lasting scars.

In response, the NPFL imposed heavy sanctions on Kwara United, including a ₦10 million fine, a deduction of three points, and three goals from their tally.

The club has since issued an apology, pledging to cooperate with security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the violence.
