Enekwechi Out of Title Race but Chasing First World Indoor Tour Gold Win in Torun

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will step into the circle at the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun on Sunday evening with one clear goal: to finally secure his first World Indoor Tour Gold victory.

The 33-year-old multiple African Games and African Championships medalist may already be out of contention for the overall tour crown, the $10,000 bonus, and the wildcard entry to next month’s World Indoor Championships, but he remains motivated to leave his mark at the season finale.

Enekwechi, who holds a season’s best of 21.28m, faces a formidable field that includes Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell, and Americans Joe Kovacs and Roger Steen.

Fabbri has already thrown a world-leading 22.50m this year and triumphed in Liévin, while Campbell can clinch the overall tour title with victory and a throw beyond 22.04m.

Jordan Geist, meanwhile, leads the standings with 27 points with Campbell second with 24 points and Roger Steen third (20 points)

Meanwhile, Kovacs (14 points) brings the pedigree of a two-time world champion to the contest albeit, like Enekwechi (13 points), he is also out of the running for the title and the prize bonus.

The men’s shot put promises a heavyweight finale, but for Enekwechi, the challenge is also an opportunity.

A win in Torun would not only be a personal breakthrough but also a statement of intent ahead of the World Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze next month.
