Iwobi Calls Wonder Goal Vs Spurs ‘Unique’, Says His Team-Mates Weren’t Surprised

Alex Iwobi marked his 313th Premier League appearance and 250th start with a stunning strike in Fulham’s London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur, describing the finish as ‘unique’ and insisting his team-mates had seen him practice it often in training.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the Nigerian midfielder said: ‘Another London derby, a special moment when we play in front of our fans, we are grateful we were able to get that result today. We feel we controlled the game and created a lot of opportunities to score, but if you don’t take them it becomes shaky. Credit to us we were able to stay strong towards the end.’

Iwobi praised Harry Wilson’s influence, noting: ‘He is a special player, when he has the ball we know he will create something or score. We give him that trust and freedom to do as he pleases.’

On his own goal, Iwobi explained: ‘Unique, that’s the best way to put it. I don’t think anyone has the groins to open up their hip and side-foot it like that. When H passes to me I had one thought, to side-foot it. I do it in training, so my team-mates weren’t surprised.’

Looking ahead, he underlined Fulham’s ambitions: ‘We were ambitious from the start of the season, we need to stay consistent. We see quality in training every day, we need to bring that into matches. We need to stay mentally strong and keep together.’
