Buffon Urges Italy to Secure Kayode Before Nigeria

Gianluigi Buffon has called on Italy to move quickly for Brentford’s Michael Kayode before Nigeria’s Super Eagles make their own approach.

The legendary goalkeeper, speaking to Football Italia, praised the 21-year-old’s rise in the Premier League this season, where he has made 28 appearances and impressed with his long throw-ins, physicality and energy as a right-back.

Kayode, born in Borgomanero to Nigerian parents, has represented Italy at U-18, U-19 and U-21 level but is yet to receive a senior call-up.

With the March international window approaching and Italy facing a crucial playoff to secure their 2026 World Cup ticket, Buffon believes the Azzurri should act decisively.

‘Another one who’s doing well is Kayode,’ Buffon said. ‘Regardless of age, the national team is for those who deserve it. You have to know how to use young players without burdening them with responsibilities. You must take fearlessness from young players.’

Buffon, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, expressed confidence that coach Gennaro Gattuso has the courage to make bold selections. ‘If there’s something he doesn’t lack, it’s courage,’ he added.

Kayode himself, speaking to The Athletic, admitted his focus remains on Brentford but acknowledged the significance of the international choice ahead.

‘For every player, it’s a dream to be in the national team, especially now because of the qualifications for the World Cup. I really hope we qualify,’ he said. “It’s important to do very well at the club because if you don’t do well at your club, you don’t get a call-up. I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me. The opportunity to play for both is amazing.’
